My rating: 4/5 stars
I really liked this book and it reminder me soooo much of Samantha Young and her Ardnoch series. It’s the perfect balance between love, action, and drama, all blended nicely together with a solid plot. I will read with interest the rest of the series and I know I will love it dearly.
Rhodes had a happy life and family, until a certain night, everything literally turned to ashes. She lost everything, but even though she experienced trauma at a young age, she is a survivor and managed to pull through. She found a wonderful foster family and grew up with supportive brothers and sisters, but her mind wandered to where she was happy with her parents and sister; therefore, she returned to her burnt house, ready to give it life again, even if it hurts like hell.
Anson is part of her construction team, and they hate each other. He is a total a.h. and doesn’t let anybody in because he has also experienced loss, and he is punishing himself by being alone and without anyone to love. Somehow, Rhodes managed to catch his attention but also his eye by being next to him most of the time and infuriating him with her sweet personality and her light. Anson is hiding a big secret and is afraid that once he lets it out, everything will be different in their relationship.
I love the two of them together, with their slow burn and off-the-charts chemistry. Rhode had a light that shone bright, and Anson was put in comparison with her, but even at this level, they made sense – they were both survivors and fought so hard to stay alive and well. Their love won’t be instant; it will be built in time, and with both of them trying to hide it, but the result will be explosive.
Besides that, elements from the past will soon come to hunt them again, making the plot dynamic and captivating to follow. I loved watching them together, and I loved how Anson’s mind worked most of the time. I loved him as a male lead because he was haunted, problematic, but also vulnerable and strong. Not to say about Rhodes – she is so brave and so intense, that Cowles couldn’t have built a more powerful couple than this.
Looking forward to reading about Shep and Thea. I have a feeling that I would cry.
