I’m a great fan of historical novels and let’s face it, if you haven’t read the “Outlander” series, it means you are haven’t explored this genre properly. The first book from this never ending story is called “Outlander” and I am absolutely convinced that after just a few pages you will be fascinated by the love story between Jamie and Claire.
Claire Randall, a war nurse, has seen horrors and deaths during her practice, experience that marked her deeply. Seeing everyday how people are hurt and struggle to stay alive changed her, but also made her dream of a better world. Wanting to leave this behind even for a while, she goes with her husband to Scotland, on their second honeymoon. They’ve been apart for so long and with this trip they are hoping to give their marriage a second chance. Scotland is amazing, with thrilling and breathtaking landscapes, offering a perfect background for their love to bloom again. It all changes when Claire visits the stones from Craigh Na Dun and goes back in time. From 1945 she travels back to 1743, in a period she only read about. Scotland in that time was full of land battles, revolts for gaining power and high social position.
From this point on her adventure begins and she has to face people with old mentalities, where class and style are left behind to make room for war and blood. Claire meets Jamie Fraser, a young Scot that will gain her friendship and trust. Jamie is a runaway, and together they will confront many unjust situations, cruel people and old mentalities. By the half way of the book Claire will seriously doubt her decision to go back, because she will fall in love with Jamie. Nobody knows her true origins, her only weapon being the knowledge she posses about Scotland, medicine and plants, that will sometimes help her, sometimes get her in serious trouble.
What inspired me and lured me into this story was the way the characters were crafted and the way they evolved throughout the plot. Claire is a special heroine, thought, independent, strong minded and extremely brave. She is not afraid to speak her mind, even if this will get her in danger. The way she fights for the people she loves and her determination on doing the right things is outstanding. Her relationship with Jamie slowly developed into something more and she will be torn between her marriage to Frank and this new feelings she has for Jamie, that are completely different, deeper and more passionate. Together they are unstoppable, doing sacrifices to keep each other safe, but destiny has plans for them, their journey just beginning.
Although the book has many pages and will take a while for you to read it, I totally recommend it. Just be patient and let the plot flow, because it is packed with historical references, so precise, detailed and well researched. If you had any doubt that Scotland is beautiful, reading it now and seeing with with Claire’s eyes, you will love it!!
From the costumes, to the habits, description of landscapes, to the language and sexy Scottish accent, all this elements are so well blended, creating a truly wonderful book, that will leave you breathless. Diana has a distinctive style, very descriptive, beginning with the war scenes and continuing with the romantic/love scenes, giving authenticity to each scene shared with us. Go on and read the book and discover the fantastic universe of Outlander 🙂

Sunt o mare fană a poveștilor istorice și trebuie să recunoaștem, dacă nu ai citit seria Outlander, înseamnă că nu iubești suficient acest gen. Primul volum din această serie aparent “fără sfârșit” scrisă de Diana Gabaldon se numește “Călătoarea” și sunt sigură că după primele pagini veți fi prinși iremediabil de povestea de dragoste dintre Claire și Jamie.
Claire Randall, infirmieră, a văzut cum ororile războiului schimbă vieți și marchează destine. Asistă în fiecare zi la scene oribile, care o impresionează și o fac să viseze la o lume mai bună. Dorind să lase pentru puțin timp totul în urmă, călătorește cu soțul ei, Frank, în Scoția. Totul pare idilic, liniștitor și aceasta este șansa lor de a avea o a doua luna de miere superbă. Între cei doi există anumite probleme, în principal cauzate de perioade mari de despărțire din cauza războiului, însă amândoi doresc să își salveze căsnicia și Scoția pare cea mai bună idee,cu peisaje frumoase și o atmosferă încântătoare. Totul se schimbă atunci când Claire vizitează pietrele de la Craigh Na Dun și se întoarce în timp. DA, ați auzit bine. Din anul 1945, Claire călătorești tocmai în 1743, într-o lume pe care a cunoscut-o doar în cărți. Scoția în această perioadă este măcinată de revolte, lupte pentru pământ, putere și poziție socială înaltă.
De aici pornește aventura ei printre oameni cu mentalități învechite, unde clasa și stilul sunt lăsate în urmă pentru a face loc raboiului și luptelor sângeroase. Aici Claire ajunge să-l cunoască pe Jamie Fraser, un tânăr scoțian cu care o să împartă mai mult decât crede. Împreună cu Jamie înfruntă multe și la sfârșitul călătoriei sale va avea mari îndoieli dacă dorește să se întoarcă sau nu în epoca sa. Nu dezvăluie nimănui de unde vine, acesta fiind secretul ei. Singura armă pe care se poate baza sunt cunoștințele pe care le posedă despre această Scoția, despre medicină și plante, care o ajută de multe ori printre oameni ignoranți sau limitați în resurse din cauza perioadei în care se află.
Un lucru impresionant în această poveste este modul în care aceste personaje au fost conturate. Claire a fost pentru mine o eroină deosebită, cu o tărie de fier, independentă și neînfricată. Nu i-a fost frică să își spună punctul de vedere indiferent de societatea în care se află, luptă până la sânge pentru ce iubește și demonstrează o tărie de caracter deosebită. Începe o relație de prietenie cu Jamie, care se dezvoltă în ceva frumos și interzis, deoarece Claire în 1945 este căsătorită cu Frank. Jamie are și el un trecut pe care dorește să îl lase în urmă și asemenea lui Claire, luptă aprig pentru ceea ce își dorește, chiar dacă uneori miza este chiar ea:) Împreună sunt de neoprit și au mult de luptat într-o societate care adesea le este împotrivă. Deși amândoi încearcă să se împotrivească, destinul îi aduce din ce în ce mai aproape și se încăpățânează să le demonstreze că deși aparțin unor perioade diferite, se pot regăsi oricând prin lucrurile pe care le au în comun.
Cartea, deși destul de lungă, ne relatează o poveste presărată cu multe elemente istorice, precise și foarte detaliate. Am apreciat documentarea Dianei în recreerea acestei epoci și modul în care a reușit să o transpună pentru că noi, cititorii, să fim fascinați de ea.
De la costume, la obicieiuri, la descrierile peisajelor, la dialect, totul a fost perfect îmbinat. Cartea are și scene cu un puternic impact emoțional, care au stârnit controverse atât pe partea de război cât și pe cea romantică, ce însă până la urmă, redau realismul de care ai nevoie într-o poveste de acest gen. Este clar, această carte este destinată unui public mai matur, însă merită din plin timpul acordat.
Recomand cu căldură această poveste pentru toate elementele care o fac unică, fiind convinsă că frumosul cuplul Claire – Jamie o să vă ajungă la inimă:)
