Price and Prejudice and Zombies by Jane Austen and Seth Grahame-Smith – bilingv review

Pride and Prejudice has always been my favorite novel, beginning with the amazing period Jane Austin describes and ending with the wonderful characters we all love and come to consider icons. Mr.Darcy will always be an example of book boyfriend, even if he is stubborn, proud and judgmental. But, you know, being in a love hate relationship with a guy only adds spices to the boiling feelings and you tend to come up with excuses all the time. And adding that he is hot, kind of puts all of the above into the shadows.

Coming back to reality, after reading Pride and Prejudice, I’ve seen so many movies and mini series adaptations, so many re-interpretations that just show you the same thing, same action, same characters and same conclusion. Nothing ever changed. But one day, I came upon this book and firstly I thought it was a joke.Really? From all the things on Heaven, Earth, Purgatory and Hell, they associate this love story with zombies? Now that was something to read about and see if this mix was a success.

And you know what?? It was very nice:D I was surprised by this conclusion, but I truly liked it. It was basically the same connection between the characters, Elizabeth Bennett with Darcy and Jane with Mr. Bingley, but it had this strange twist, they all fight zombies and protect others from their mortal bite. The visual of seeing Mr. Darcy fighting zombies is quite delicious if you ask me, and after all the details provided in the book, he was very good at it.

I liked that in spite this mission of saving the world from brain eating zombies, the characters remained the same as I’ve read about them in the first adaptation. Elizabeth was proud, Darcy mysterious, Jane very guarded and not speaking about her true feelings and Mr. Bingley of course ignorant of everything about it. We will definitely have Mr. Wickman in the scene, version 2.0, meaner and with a more complex role this time. You will see that he will get very well acquainted with the zombies and it’s up to our beloved characters to save the day.

In conclusion, I had a very good good time reading this book, because I could see my favorite characters in a very different background and read about their thrilling adventures. I could imagine them role playing and it was nice and strange in the same time. But because you have Jane Austen involved, it’s impossible not to like it and not put aside this horror element. In a way, it was quite original, attracting Romance readers and Horror as well. And besides this, I loved the illustrations in the book. Very well designed and it kind of introduced you more to the story in terms of visual and reality.

Mândrie şi Prejudecată a fost întotdeauna cartea mea preferată prin modul în care Jane Austen scrie despre o epocă de poveste. Totul părea magic atunci, pornind de la locuri, oameni şi terminând cu obiceiurile şi tradițiile care personal, m-au fascinat. Domniţele erau pasionate de artele frumoase, domnii erau din cale afară de galanţi şi totul părea perfect.

Pentru a schimba puţin registrul, Jane Austen s-a hotărât să colaboreze cu un scriitor renumit al genului horror şi să ne ofere acest mixt surprinzător, dar interesant, care a reuşit să îmi capteze atenţia şi să îmi stârnească poftă de a o explora neapărat. Ştiu că pare foarte ciudată această asociere, însă vă asigur că este una reuşită. Mulţi dintre voi probabil gândiţi că de ce tocmai zombi? Existau o mulţime de idei care puteau să se întrepătrundă cu personajele noastre, iar Jane Austen a ales tocmai aceste creaturi ciudate pentru a ne oferi o re-interpretare a poveştii de iubire dintre Elizabeth Bennet şi Darcy.

Din punctul meu de vedere a fost inspirată şi tocmai acest element surprinzător face cartea foarte palpitantă şi uşor de citit. Legăturile dintre personaje rămân la fel, cuplurile noastre se iubesc la fel ca în cartea originală şi au aceleaşi trăsături marcante. Elizabeth este extrem de inteligentă şi de ambiţioasă, Darcy misterios şi mândru, Jane timidă şi reticentă în a-şi exprima sentimentele, iar Bingley la fel de visător. Evident avem parte şi de un personaj negativ căruia în această carte i se va acorda un rol mai complex. Cred că v-aţi dat seamă că este vorba de Wickham. Citiţi cartea pentru a vedea exact cât de mult schimbă Jane Austen firul narativ şi destinul personajelor îndrăgite de generaţii întregi.

Fără îndoială, Darcy este una dintre cele mai marcante personaje masculine ale literaturii universale, prin felul lui complex de a fi, de a se purta şi mai ales prin mândria de care dă dovadă în relaţia cu Elizabeth. Judecă aspru, se ghidează după aparenţe și uneori nu vede ceea ce este exact în fața ochilor săi. Rămâne de văzut în ce ipostaze îl va  surprinde Jane Austen , însă tot ce vă pot spune este că ţelul lui în viaţa îl constituie apărarea oamenilor de zombii şi se va dedica total acestei misiuni. Acelaşi lucru îl va face şi Elizabeth, pe care o vedem aici într-o perspectivă diferită. Este mult mai puternică, mai hotărâtă şi poate înfrunta pericole pe care să fim serioşi, nu orice fată ar putea. Toate personajele capătă această “aură războinică”, însă nu uită că dragostea trebuie pusă pe primul plan.

Rămâne doar să citiţi cartea, indiferent dacă ştiţi povestea sau nu. Pentru fanii cărţii iniţiale, vă asigur că veţi fi plăcut surprinşi de perspectivă nouă dată acţiunii, iar pentru cei care încă nu sunt familiarizaţi cu povestea, doar rămâne să vă bucuraţi de acestă combinație curajoasă de dragoste, loialitate şi creaturi ciudate care pun în pericol lumea pe care o ştim.
