On the Island by Tracey Garvis-Graves – bilingv review

My dear readers, I think I’ve found the perfect sunny book for rainy days. “On the Island” by Tracey Garvis-Graves is a light, soft story which will truly captivate you and keep your attention peeked until the last page. Besides a lovely story, it also captures others issues, making the whole package a wonderful experience.

Anna Emerson is a young English teacher that has to take an important decision regarding her life and future. She has been in a relationship for 8 year and unfortunately, things are not progressing the way she dreamt. While she is ready to get married and have kids, her boyfriend is not ready to take this step, leaving Anna sad and doubtful about their relationship. Before taking a final decision, she accepts the proposition to tutor T.J.Callahan during Summer time, helping him with the behind subjects. She will be doing this on an island in the Maldives, making the proposition even better. Anna and T.J. take a private jet towards their destination, but on the way, the pilot suffers and heart attach, causing the plane to crash on a deserted island.

From this point on, the 2 of them will receive a very hard life lesson, fighting for survival. Desperate, starving, cold and scared, between the 2 a very strong bond appears, based mainly on the survival instinct. United by all they have to face on the island, Anna and T.J. began to slowly discover each other and besides that, fall in love.

Their relationship could feel at first glace kind of complicated, beginning with the age difference: Anna is 30 and T.J. 16, but the plot progressed on a large timeline, capturing our heroes in different aspects of their lives, marking their development and making the readers realise that the age different is not an issue. Anna fights really hard against her feelings, while T.J. is more sure and mature than any teen of his age. He has this maturity mainly because he has cancer, this disease forcing him to live a hard and different life. The circumstances find them in extreme conditions and they learn to stay alive, becoming friends, confidents and falling in love.

The book took my breath away, not only because of the love story.. NO! Because it brought us together 2 different characters, belonging to different worlds, united by tragedy and finding the strength to survive. The focus is put the power of the human spirit and on authenticity, sincerity and being open to the person that shared so much with you. I totally recommend this book and I guarantee you it will be a hit for you.

Dragii mei, am găsit cartea perfectă pentru zilele călduroase de vară, atunci când nu vreţi să faceţi nimic decât să leneviţi şi evident, să citiţi. “On the Island” de Tracey Garvis-Graves este o poveste frumoasă şi lejeră, care sigur va reuşi să vă captiveze şi emoţioneze de la prima până la ultima pagină. În afară de povestea de dragoste prezentată, subiectul tratează lucruri mai profunde, care vor face întreg “pachetul” să fie o experienţă de neuitat.

Personajul principal este Anna Emerson, o tânăra profesoară de engleză, care are de luat o decizie importantă în ceea ce priveşte viitorul ei. Este într-o relaţie de 8 ani şi din păcate, lucrurile nu funcţionează aşa cum credea ea. În timp ce ea este gata să se căsătorească şi să aibă copii, iubitul ei nu doreşte acest lucru, lăsând-o pe Anna descumpănită şi îndoindu-se de ceea ce se va întâmpla în continuare cu relaţia lor. Înainte de a lua o decizie finală, acceptă propunerea de a deveni tutorele lui T.J.Callahan şi pe timpul verii, va sta alături de el, ajutându-l să recupereze materia restantă. Atunci când familia lui T.J. îi spune că vara şi-o va petrece pe o insulă din Maldive, totul devine mai frumos pentru ea, şi astfel, Anna şi T.J. iau un avion privat şi pornesc spre destinaţia lor. În timpul călătoriei, pilotul suferă un infarct, dar înainte ca avionul să se prăbuşească, le indică celor doi ce au de făcut pentru a supravieţui căderii.

Anna şi T.J. reuşesc să ajungă pe o insulă pustie, unde împreună primesc o lecţie dură de viaţă. Disperaţi, înfometaţi, înfrigurați şi speriaţi, între cei doi se crează o legătură foarte puternică, bazată în mare parte pe instinctul de supravieţuire. Uniţi de întâmplările avute pe insulă, Anna şi T.J. încep încet încet să se descopere şi pornind de la această relaţie bazată pe sinceritate, se îndrăgostesc.

Relaţia lor poate părea la prima vedere puţin complicată, începând de la diferenţa de vârstă. Anna are 30 de ani şi T.J. 16, însă acţiunea petrecându-se pe o perioada mai lungă de timp, îi va găsi pe eroii noştri în diferite etape ale vieţii lor şi veţi observa că acest lucru nu are un impact foarte mare asupra cititorului. Anna se împotriveşte destul de mult sentimentelor sale, însă T.J. este mult mai sigur şi matur în legătură cu ceea ce se întâmplă între ei. Oricum, acesta are un fel mai matur de gândire şi din cauza bolii avute, cancer, a fost forţat să ducă o viaţă dură faţă de alţi adolescenţi de vârstă sa. Viaţa îi găseşte împreună în aceste condiţii şi trebuie să supravieţuiască. Se împrietenesc, devin confidenţi şi de acolo totul duce spre o legătură indestructibilă.

Cartea m-a emoţionat profund, deoarece nu are în centru doar o poveste de dragoste. Nu! Ne prezintă două personaje diferite, ce vin din lumi diferite, care puse în faţa unei tragedii învaţă să aibă încredere şi să supravieţuiască. Accentul este pus mai ales pe puterea spiritului uman şi pe veridicitatea sentimentelor pe care cei doi le au unul faţă de celălalt. Recomand cu drag această carte, deoarece garantat nu o veţi lasă din mână. Stilul curat al autoarei şi sinceritatea personajelor o să vă cucerească iremediabil.
