John Winchester’s Journal by Alex Irvine – bilingv review

“Supernatural” is my favorite show of all times and I will continue watching it until the CW pulls the plug. Recently I’ve got my hands on the hard copy of “John Winchester Journal” and I did a happy dance when seeing that it now belongs to me. My first ever book about Supernatural will have a special place on my bookcase.

As we all know, Sam and Dean have a very complex story, that began the night their mom Mary was killed by the yellow-eyed demon. Orphans, they were looked after by their dad, John, but consumed by revenge, he became a hunter, killing things like the one that took Mary away from him. Their childhood was marked by supernatural creatures, adventures and hunts, making Sam and Dean one of the most trained and awesome team of brothers out there. Following the “family business” they would give up their lives for others, in order to keep the world safe, because its in their blood and nature.

John’s journal has been for many seasons the boys only research tool, finding information which helped them solve cases, kill mysterious creature and in the end, save the day. It is divided as following: a part is dedicated to John’s cases and another to his family. In the first one, the readers find info about monsters, hunters, photos, notes, drawings, historical and mythological info that all have connections with his hunts. It is similar to a scrap book, where he gathered all of them, stick them together and voila, there you have it Sam and Dean, figure it out:)) All of them are referring to a lot of episodes from the show and I loved challenging my knowledge while reading the book.

The other part that relates to his family is very emotional and if you are a fan, you will feel the pain Sam and Dean went through because of John’s absence. Their relationship was very complicated and you have the tendency to judge John because his quest for  revenge was greater than his love for this sons. After reading this, I’ve changed my perspective and saw another side of John that I knew was there, but haven’t felt it in the show. He tells us his side of the story, telling us how he miss his boys and shares with us certain events that he wanted to mark forever in his journal. By definition a journal is something intimate, private, and after reading it, you manage to have another side of Sam and Dean’s childhood and see why he was so cherished by them until a certain point. What he went through was tragic and you can actual feel his pain, his remorse, but what is done is done and never can go back to change it.

I recommend this book especially for Supernatural fans, because it is extremely interesting, well researched and packed with familiar information. It will definitely change a lot of things you already though you know and offer you the possibility to dive further into this continuous source of inspiration which is “Supernatural”.

Atenţie fani Supernatural, urmează o recenzie… de groază 🙂 Recent am primit “Jurnalul lui John Winchester” de Alex Irvineşi am ţopăit de fericire deoarece în sfârşit am prima mea carte de colecţie care face referire la serialul mult iubit. Aşa cum bine ştim, povestea lui Sam şi Dean Winchester este una foarte complicată şi porneşte de la moartea mamei lor, Mary Winchester. Aceasta a fost omorâtă de un demon şi începând din acea noapte, deci doi fraţi au rămas orfani practic de ambii părinţi, deoarece tatăl lor, John Winchester, şi-a dedicat viaţa răzbunării şi găsirii acelui demon, privându-i pe Sam şi Dean de dragostea paternă după care tânjeau atât de mult. În timp, cei doi fraţi au devenit şi ei vânători, urmând “tradiţia” de familie şi misiunea lor a fost să protejeze oamenii de tot ce este supranatural, dându-şi viaţa pentru acest ideal.

“Jurnalul lui John Winchester” a fost pentru câteva sezoane singului ghid al băieţilor, în el găsind toate informaţiile necesare desluşirii multor cazuri. De la informaţii despre persoane, despre monştrii, arme sau locaţii, John a pus bazele unui instrument foarte important pentru Sam şi Dean, la care au apelat foarte des.

Cartea este împărţită astfel: o parte dedicată cazurilor întâlnite de John în vânătorile sale şi una dedicată vieţii sale de familie. În prima, găsim detaliate informaţii despre monştrii vânaţi, de la poze, notiţe, istoric şi informaţii mitologice, la relatări din misiunile sale. Arată ca un fel de scrapbook, unde a adunat tot ce a putut găsi folositor referitor la acel subiect. Mi s-a părut foarte interesant şi în acelaşi timp am putut să fac multe legături cu episoadele pe care le-am văzut, ceea ce mi-a crescut nivelul de cunoaştere al legendelor care au pus bazele serialului.

A două parte tratează strict viaţa de familie, modul în care John a interacţionat cu băieţii săi şi regretele sale asupra celor pierdute în relaţia cu ei. Dacă până acum l-am cunoscut pe John mai mult din perspectiva lui Sam şi Dean, acum practic el ne spune versiunea sa. Scrie în jurnal cât de mult îi lipsesc băieţii săi şi relatează anumite momente pe care doreşte să le păstreze pentru totdeauna. De la prima dată când Sam a mers în picioare, la prima vânătoare la care l-a dus pe Dean, John ne spune cât de mândru este de ei şi cât şi-ar fi dorit să fie mai implicat în viaţa lor. Dacă până acum îl judecam, acum pot să spun că l-am înţeles într-un fel, realizând ce a pierdut după moartea soţiei sale şi am empatizat cu durerea sa. Ceea ce a trăit John a fost tragic şi chinurile prin care a trecut l-au schimbat, nemaiputând face nimic să schimbe cursul evenimentelor.

Recomand cu căldură acestă carte pentru fanii Supernatural, este foarte interesantă şi foarte bine documentată. Parcurgerea ei poate schimba perspectiva unora asupra personajului John Winchester şi aduce un plus de cunoaștere în acest univers deosebit ce aparent, este un izvor continuu de inspiraţie pentru creatorii serialului.
