My rating: 5/5 stars
(ENG)
How in the world could you rate this book lower than 5 stars?? How? I am simply starstruck and very excited with this series which managed to blow my expectations away!! I am a huge fan of The Mortal Instruments and I considered Cassandra could not write better than that! Ahhh, why did I misjudged her, I have no idea, but frankly, I’m very happy I did, because the after shock was amazingly welcoming.
“The Infernal Devices” series is a prequel to the Mortal Instruments one, set in the 1800 England, a very vintage and historical background, very fitting for me and for my reading tastes.
Tessa Gray is our heroine, a young girl that after her aunt’s dead, followed her brother, Nate, to England. She was hoping for a new beginning alongside him, only that things didn’t turn out like that for her.. Alone and afraid, Tessa is left on a strange land without the protection of her brother, abducted by The Dark Sisters, tortured and forced to use some power she didn’t know she possessed. Apparently, Tessa is a shift changer, can change her appearance by touching ones person belongings. This power makes her priceless and there are mystical creatures that want her for that. The Magister is one of them, and he will do anything to have Tessa and use her powers for evil deeds.
After many weeks of torture, she is saved by Will Herondale and Jem Carstairs, 2 brave young boys that introduce her to The Shadow World. They are called Nephilims or Shadowhunters and they will completely change Tessa’s life, by reveling her true nature and meaning. Together, they will embark on a tremendous adventure full of danger, treason, mixed feelings, but where also many lives will be lost. She will learn to fight and act like a Shadowhunter, leaving anything she knew aside and focus on keeping alive the people she cares about and that form her only family. No more spoilers for you:D
Let me tell you about my favorite subject, which is the love triangle formed by Tessa-Will-Jem. I am completely in love with this characters and consider their relationship very intense and confusing.
Will is definitely my favorite from book 1 because I associate him with Jace (inevitably) and see all his qualities and flaws in him. They are extremely alike, the only thing different being their appearance, leaving you to just be socked by the similarities. With both parents dead, Will was raised by Shadowhunters to be an excellent warrior from a young age. He has a lot of attitude issues, making him look arrogant and hot tempered, but this is just a shield, to not seem vulnerable in front of others. He is very intriguing, mysterious and sarcastic, leaving you a puzzle to piece together. His best friend and parabatai is Jem, his opposite in character and appearance. I have to say that I was drawn more to Jem due to his good heart and intentions, because he seemed so calm, almost romantic in a way and you are convinced that every girl would want a Jem in her life. They manage to complete each other in battle, being a great team, but as you will see, their affections will be focused on the same girl and their friendship will be heavily tested.
Tessa and I had the same problem? Who to choose? If you ask me, I would go with a combination of both of them, but because it’s impossible, you have to read the books to see her decisions. It will be very complicated, because the heart and mind are 2 separate entities that will governate Tessa entirely different, causing her confusion and mixed feelings. You will love it, I just know!!!!
Tessa will be everyone point of interest in this book, because she is an outsider, someone very different from all the Shadowhunters, but not because of her powers, but because of her feelings and power of love and forgiveness. She is the element that will unite the Shadow World, but also cause a lot of conflicts. Some compared her with Clary, but I don’t think it’s the case, I considered them very different, only being united by confronting a world they didn’t know about.
As a conclusion, I am very excited with this series and can’t wait to devour the next one. If you are familiar with the original series, it will be a bonus because a lot of terms, characters, names and species will be familiar to you, but if you aren’t, don’t be sad, you will pick them up quickly. I loved the pace of the plot and the way the characters and elements were introduced, even if you haven’t read The Mortal Instruments. All the info is there and nothing is left with blanks. I loved the way the plot and characters were built, the drama, the angst and the action keeping you 100% alert. If you know Cassie, you recognize her style and know you are in for a treat!!!
