The Book Thief by Markus Zusak – bilingv review

Books that are made into motion pictures are not my personal favorite, but not from the reason that you think. Nope. When I discover a book that will soon be turned into a movie, I get very possessive of it and I don’t want to share it with the world. Now everybody is talking about it, about how much of a fan are they and I don’t like it. I don’t like the film boosting the book, because originally it had to be in reverse.

“The Book Thief” is one of my all time favorites and I am very happy to have read it without seeing the movie, at all.

The plot is placed during WWII, where Liesel is sent to adoption by her mother, after her little brother died because of the conditions they leaved it. She is accepted into the house of a modest family, who loved her the minute they saw her. Liesel was raised withing the German regime, making her more mature for her age, because seeing what war can do to people manages to change you, but also give you strength.  She learns to read and steels books to help her neighbors be more aware of the political situation their country is facing. When her family shelters a Jewish man in their basement, danger surrounds them, because the regime they live into forbids it. Leisel will do anything to hide him and will put her life in danger doing so.

I loved Liesel for her strong will at such a tender age. Although war is clearly affecting her, she manages to keep that innocence and hope for a better future. The readers will definitely have the tendency to protect her, stay by her side and prevent anything for happening to her. I didn’t want war to change her because her pure heart was something worth fighting for. She is very smart, with a fighting character, that blends well with others and unite them, because she has the qualities of a leader.

Markus Zusak’s style is like nothing I’ve ever seen before, because he was a narrative perspective that others might consider odd. Liesel is constantly followed by Death, and from his POV the plot will be described to the reader. I know, it’s very hard to imagine, but Death is literally a characters in this book. The action is very complex and dramatic and my recommendation is to go slow when reading it, to enjoy all the happenings. Certain scenes will be hard for you to read, but at time of war it is impossible to use other type of scenes. Another special thing about the narrative style is the little spoilers that you receive within the story, and the reader is constantly informed what will happen next. I haven’t seen such thing in a lot of books, but Markus handled it perfectly, because I don’t know if my heart could have taken it more.

Read the book first and maybe watch the movie after.

Cărţile ecranizate nu sunt punctul meu forte pentru că sunt o fire puţin egoistă în ceea ce le priveşte. După ce apare filmul, toată lumea adoră şi cartea şi nu mi se pare corect. Întâi savurăm cartea şi o iubim pentru frumuseţea ei şi după aceea vedem şi filmul. “Hoţul de Cărţi” de Markus Zusak este una dintre preferatele mele şi sunt foarte bucuroasă că am descoperit-o, deoarece tratează un subiect atât de frumos şi deosebit, încât mi-a atras atenţia imediat.

Acţiunea se petrece în timpul Celui De-al Doilea Război Mondial. Liesel a fost trimisă spre adopţie de către mama ei, după ce fratele acesteia a murit. Ajunge să fie acceptată de către o familie modestă, dar cu care se înţelege foarte bine. Toată viaţa lor a fost dictată de regimul nazist şi practic Liesel ajunge să se maturizeze înainte de vreme în acest context de război şi tragedie. Învaţă să citească şi fură cărţi pentru a-şi ajuta vecinii să înţeleagă mai bine cele întâmplate în prezent dar şi pentru că este pasionată de poveştile descoperite între coperţile vechi. Atunci când familia ei adăposteşte un evreu în beci, lucrurile încep să se complice din ce în ce mai mult şi Liesel va face tot posibilul să ţină acest secret ascuns.

Liesel este un personaj foarte puternic pentru vârstă pe care o are. Deşi afectată de peisajul de război, aceasta reuşeşte să îşi păstreze inocenţa şi speranţa că lucrurile se vor îndrepta. Am avut tot timpul dorinţa de a o proteja, de a sta alături de ea, pentru că orice gest de al ei izvorăşte din prea multă bunătate şi nu voiam ca această inima pură să fie mânjită de faptele războiului. Mi-a plăcut modul în care interacţionează cu alte personaje, faptul că esteinteligenţă şi luptătoare pentru ceea ce consideră just.

Stilul lui Markus Zusak m-a intrigat şi am fost surprinsă să văd ce perspectivă de narare a ales. Liesel este constant urmărită de Moarte, care este naratorul cărţii noastre şi relatează tot ce se întâmplă. Ştiu, greu de crezut, Moartea este un personaj activ in această carte.. Întâmplările sunt complexe şi dramaticeşi recomandarea mea este să citiţi încet această carte deoarece trebuie savurată şi înţeleasă. Veţi lua parte la scene grele, dificile, plasate într-un context de război care justifică cele menţionate anterior. Un lucru deosebit la acest autor este modul în care plasează spoilere în cadrul poveştii şi cum informează cititorul de ceea ce se va întâmpla. Rar vezi aşa ceva şi sincer pentru mine stilul lui Markus Zusak a funcționat de minune, pentru că în multe scene inima mea nu mai putea suporta mult și aveam nevoie de ceva ajutor.

În câteva cuvinte, vă încurajez să citiţi cartea, ulterior dacă doriţi să vedeţi filmul, dar aşa cum v-aţi obişnuit, cartea câştigă întotdeauna:)
