On the Jellicoe Road by Melina Marchetta – bilingv review

YA fans know how vast this genre is and there are many iconic books that managed to stay with you a lot of time after finishing them. On my “all time favorites” lies “On the Jellicoe Road” by Melina Marchetta, because her style is amazing and the way she drafted this story was unbelievable, simply bleowing me away. Her storytelling is lyrical, genuine and clean, with a very different approach VS the other authors I’ve encountered so far.

Taylor Markham, 17, lives on the Jellicoe Road, in a boarding school. She was abandoned 6 years ago by her mom and found in a restaurant by Hannah, who took her in. They became best friends and she was the only person in front of whom Taylor could be herself, without fears or concerns. When Hannah abruptly disappears, she is extremely worried and goes in search for her. This is basically the main plot, but besides that we also have “mini” ones like the territory battles between the kids from Taylor’s institution or the love story between her and Jonah, the leader of one of the rival teams, a very lovable character, that will spice up the story. The focus is not very much on the love story, the reader has to be aware of the initiation journey that will make the characters more mature.

I don’t know where to begin with the parts I loved. Firstly, the characters are amazing and extremely complex, because they just seem to get better and better as the story progresses. Taylor is something else, because even of her background, she grew up extremely well. As expected, she is complex and difficult to figure out, because after being abandoned, she is guarded and cautious. She is very determined, with a specific sense of humor, very ironic, but smart and witty. Taylor is the leader of the kids from the Jellicoe institution, but she is not in her element, because she doesn’t want to stand out, to be noticed. She likes to live quietly, in her own world, but the circumstances will force her to be brave, to go out of her comfort zone and go in search for Hannh, because she needs her friend back.

Second, Melina’s style is nothing like I’ve ever read, such a lyrical book, beautifully told and not easy to read. All the elements from the book are tied together and every connection made is sooooo smart, so well blended. There are 2 perspectives, past and present, that until the end of the book will go full circle and the reader will put all the pieces together and see how well they click.

Last, but not least, what the reader goes through while reading the book is not easy, but extremely special. The action is very realistic for a fictional read, but so level headed and raw. Melina “played” with a lot of themes, like love, love for your close ones, family, colleagues, friends, for yourself! She also focuses on more uglier things like murders, abuse, disappearances, accidents, that open your eyes and shows you the cruel reality. I repeat, even if the story is fictional, the feelings are real and make you so aware of your surroundings and reality you live in. Don’t open this book if you believe the action and plot will be sugar coated, but I guarantee you will not regret it, because the message is so strong, you won’t forget it so easily.

I gladly recommend “On the Jellicoe Road” because this is not your typical YA book. The characters, the plot and everything in between are special and different. Dive in the story open minded and just open your heart to this amazing characters that won my heart irrevocably.

Fanii Young-Adult ştiu că acest gen este variat în autori faimoşi şi cărţi emblematice, însă sunt doar câteva titluri iconice care reuşesc să îţi transmită un mesaj puternic şi să îţi rămână în suflet mult timp, sau de ce nu, pentru totdeauna. Pe lista mea de “all time favorites” se află “Şoseaua Jellicoe” de Melina Marchetta, deoarece m-a impresionat de la primele pagini prin stilul sincer, curat şi liric, având o abordare total diferită faţă de cărţile citite până acum.

“Şoseaua Jellicoe” ne prezintă un personaj foarte frumos conturat, Taylor Markham, o fată de 17 ani care trăieşte într-un internat din Jellicoe, fiind abandonată de mama ei în urmă cu 6 ani într-un restaurant din zonă. Este luată în îngrijire de Hannah, ce îi devine o bună prietenă şi singura persoană faţă de care Taylor reuşeşte să fie ea însăşi. În momentul în care Hannah dispare, viaţa lui Taylor se schimbă şi extrem de îngrijorată, porneşte în căutarea acesteia. Aşa pot rezuma intriga în linii mari, însă pe lângă aventurile personajului principal, avem alte “mini-intrigi” pe care ne putem concentra, cum ar fi lupta pentru teritoriu împotriva “Cadeţilor” şi a “Orașeilor” sau povestea de dragoste dintre Taylor şi Jonah, un personaj la fel de complex ca eroina noastră, pe care sigur îl veţi adora, fiind sarea şi piperul cărţii.

Ce îţi rămâne în minte după ce termini cartea? Nu ştiu de unde să încep… În primul şi primul rând, personajele sunt uluitoare şi îţi devin extrem de apropiate pe măsură ce te cufunzi în lectură. Taylor este o eroină pe care o descoperi treptat, fiind foarte complexă şi greu de descifrat. După abandonul mamei sale, nu a lăsat pe nimeni să se apropie emoţional de ea, păstrând clar distanţă şi punându-şi o mască dură. Hannah a fost singura care a reuşit să o înţeleagă şi fiind persoană care a găsit-o în acea zi nefastă, legătură dintre cele două este foarte puternică. Este extrem de hotărâtă în tot ce îşi propune şi m-a încântat acel simt al umorului ironic, replicile acide dar şi foarte inteligente pe care le oferă. Este liderul copiilor din internat, dar acest lucru nu o încântă în mod deosebit, deorece nu doreşte să atragă atenţia, fiind în largul ei la adăpost, în lumea sa. Totuşi, acest personaj evoluează într-un mod fantastic şi ne arată cât de puternic este pe parcursul călătoriei sale.

În al doilea rând, stilul Melinei este deosebit, elementele lirice făcând lectura foarte frumoasă şi uşor de parcurs. Toate elementele prezentate în poveste au legătură între ele, fiind plasate strategic printre rândurile cărţii. Există două perspective, trecut şi prezent, ce alternează şi care, până la sfârşitul cărţii, închid cercul întâmplărilor prezentate într-un mod impresionant.

În ultimul rând, stărileprin care treci atunci când citeşti această carte sunt deosebite şi te ajută să vezi viaţa cu alţi ochi. Temele variate pe care le abordează Melina sunt uluitoare şi extrem de reale şi impactante. Vorbeşte despre dragoste, despre dragostea de frate, de aproape, de colegi, de prieteni, de propria persoană! Te ajută să te iubeşti, să te regăseşti, fiind o călătorie care iniţiază personajele din carte, dar care ajută şi cititorul să vadă cu alţi ochi oamenii din jurul său. Vorbeşte despre lucruri reale, urâte, despre ucigaşi, neglijenţă, abuzuri, dispariţii, accidente, care îţi deschid ochii într-un mod dramatic, dar te fac să realizezi că aceastea se întâmplă în viaţă de zi cu zi şi nu trebuie eclipsate de o ficţiune care de multe ori ne ține departe de realitatea crudă. Nu deschide această carte în speranţa că acţiunea te va menaja şi că totul este acoperit cu un strat frumos de “dulce”. Realismul celor relatate te va impresiona, dar te va maturiza ca cititor şi ca persoană.

Recomand din suflet “Şoseaua Jellicoe” deoarece nu este o carte tipică YA, cu personaje obișnuite şi acţiune liniară. NU! O consider una dintre cele mai bune cărţi ale acestui gen (repet ideea, ştiu, dar trebuie să înţelegeţi clar acest lucru), fiind o călătorie tulburătoare, unde tragedia şi durerea întâlnesc speranţa şi prietenia, unde te indentifici cu personajele şi trăieşti intens fiecare moment, unde plângi, râzi şi vrei să spui tuturor ce lecţie minunată de viaţă ai primit.
